Când Jarrett a cântat primele patru note, un murmur de râsete a trecut prin auditoriu. Fusese anunţat de către cei de la casa de opera prin clopotul ce anunţă pauzele.

Dar la fel de repede, reacţia s-a transformat într-o tăcere respectuasă ca apoi Jarrett să transforme ceva banal şi familiar în ceva superb şi misterios. Pe LP, concertul a fost tăiat în patru segmente, deşi în acea noapte el a cântat in două reprize cu o durată de aproximativ o jumătate de oră fiecare, plus un bis de 6 minute.

Prima parte este mai lirică, meditativă. Jarrett foloseste pedala pianului pentru a crea un lichid, un sunet din care apar melodii uşoare, chiar şovăielnice. Partea a II-a începe la fel de ritmat, cu variaţii scurte de sunet repetitive şi continue cântate cu mâna stângă în timp ce cu mâna dreaptă gama muzicală curge ca un izvor.
Cu fiecare minut de variaţii armonice, Jarrett abordează diferite genuri muzicale: rock ‘n’ roll, hoedown, minimalist music. O tăcere bruscă dă frâu liber unui pasaj meditativ, iar apoi muzica incepe din nou, de această dată mai modal, oarecum cu ritmuri orientale, complet distincte. Repetările sunt simple şi dulci ca un cântec familiar.

În lumea jazz-ului din 1975, frumuseţea pură a programului a fost revoluţionară. Aceasta a contribuit la a-l face accesibil unui public care, străină de muzica jazz, a condus la succesul imens al albumului. Popularitatea concertului din Köln a fost suspectată de multi critici — inclusiv de însuşi Jarrett. Imitaţii nenumărate — compuse, desigur, nu improvizate — a căutat să recreeze lirismul muzicii lui Jarrett. Fani devotaţi au încercat să transcrie ceea ce au auzit pe albumul de concert, încercând să exprime peste noapte acest moment de inspiraţie. O versiune de chitară a fost chiar publicată.

Dar fără a participa direct la elementele de improvizaţie, magia s-a pierdut. Spre deosebire de o bucată de muzică clasică, “The Köln Concert” este o capodoperă numai în forma înregistrată atunci. Aceasta necesită o audienţă care să participe la actul de creaţie pentru a fi realizat din nou.
